BREEDER REFERRAL

LOOKING FOR A QUALITY BLUE WEIMARANER PUPPY?

The quality of today's Blue Weimaraner has diminished considerably. After the 1972 disqualification, unscrupulous breeders bred for coat color alone and without concern for proving breeding stock claiming that Blues were rare. (Blues are not rare!). There are very few quality Blue Weimaraners being bred today. For this reason it is important to be extraordinarily selective when supporting the breeding practices of Blue breeders when purchasing a puppy from one. Quality must be demanded from the breeder. Blue breeders unwilling to prove their dogs' breed worthiness are doing Weimaraners as a whole, and Blue Weimaraners in particular, a disservice. Breeders should be confident enough about their breeding stock to be able to put them in competition against all Weimaraners, whether in field, obedience or agility as well as other tests, including health and temperament, which objectively measure quality. Only the best proven dogs should bred.  Buyers should seek out breeders who care enough about Blue Weimaraners to test their breeding stock.

While we are pleased that the internet has made education about Blues far more accessible than it had been in the past, it also means that breeders have gotten savvy with their advertising.  Some of these breeders are being honest only on the surface, and "hidden" red flags may not be easy to identify.  Because it can be difficult to separate the reputable from the less-than-reputable breeder, Blueweimaraner.com is now providing a list of "approved" Blue Weimaraner breeders.

In order to qualify to be on this list, the breeders listed and approved here have conformed to the following criteria:

- Breeder is respected by other reputable breeders of Weimaraners, INCLUDING those that do not personally care for the Blue coat color.
- Breeder is breeding dogs WITH TITLES with few exceptions.  This means, the sire and dam are titled, not that there are a couple titled dogs 3+ generations back. Ideally, most dogs in the pedigree, especially in the nearest generations, should be titled.  (Titles prove that someone other than the breeder think the dog is worthy of breeding.)
- Breeder breeds for health, temperament, companionship AND type. Type is what makes a Weimaraner a Weimaraner, and includes conformation and hunting ability.  These qualities should be PROVEN.  (Many mixed breeds are healthy, have sound temperaments, and provide companionship.  Without type,  a Weimaraner is "just" a dog.)
- Breeder is involved in breed clubs and other dog clubs, often holding officer positions and often involved with organizing and participating in shows, trials, tests, etc. (Breeders that are involved can provide proper mentorship and advice.)
- Breeder is well versed in genetics and has extensive knowledge of various Weimaraner kennels and pedigrees.
- Breeder has extensive knowledge, good AND BAD, of their own breeding stock.
- Breeder provides a LIFETIME return policy for the puppies they sell, with a fair contract and guarantees that benefit breeder, owner and most of all, the dog. (A 18 month guarantee on hips, for example, is worthless as hips are generally tested at 24 months.)
- Breeder sells all puppies in a litter for the same price regardless of gender, coat color, length, quality of hips, etc.
- Breeder does not sell for profit and will refer buyers to other breeders that may suit owner's needs better.  Breeder assesses puppies individually and often work with other reputable breeders to evaluate puppies.  Breeder rarely allows owners to choose their own puppies.
- Breeder's goal is to improve the breed.

Your puppy is a lifetime investment, and it is worth finding a quality dog. Please do not hesitate to ask a breeder for PROOF of their claims!
